Project: Family Centre in Malki Iskar

Our cooperation with CONCORDIA Social Projects first started with the funding of projects in Romania, and since 2014 we also support the organisation in Bulgaria. CONCORDIA provides direct and immediate help on the ground to children, young people and families in need in southeastern Europe. CONCORDIA’s aim is to enable children from vulnerable backgrounds to remain with their families.

In its social centres CONCORDIA offers low-threshold aid for the whole family. The Malki Iskar Family Centre in the rural region of Etropole, almost 100 km from Sofia, looks after extremely poor families from the area. The children receive learning support and help with their homework, and their personalities are strengthened with the aid of playful and creative activities. Their parents are advised on matters of education and health, and receive medical support.

When we visited the project in November 2023 we were surprised when we noticed several young women swotting in the classroom. Having become pregnant at an early age they had not finished school, and had now been given the opportunity by CONCORDIA to catch up on schoolwork and be role models for their children.

We received reports from the motivated project team of an urgent requirement for early childhood care for children between the ages of one and four years, which is not available in the current structure. Children, often from the Roma community, need professional teaching support at an early age, which will strengthen them in the long term.

Once again we realised that new project ideas often arise from personal discussions on site. The outcome this time is that the Aumund Foundation as sole sponsor is financing the development and implementation of “Early Development and Learning in the CONCORDIA Malki Iskar Family Centre.” We are looking forward to the inauguration in 2025!
