Head­mas­ter David Clark could hardly believe his eyes when he saw an email from “Aumund Found­ation” in his inbox in Septem­ber 2020; a mes­sage from a Ger­man found­ation act­ively look­ing for suit­able schools for its new Round Square schol­arship pro­gramme. His reply was sent the same day, “Thank you for your email – what an unex­pec­ted sur­prise! You are cor­rect, Bridge House is a Round Square school with a schol­arship pro­gramme that act­ively tar­gets under­priv­ileged chil­dren in our com­munity. We would cer­tainly be inter­ested in being part of the Aumund Found­ation pro­gramme.” Four years later we are sup­port­ing ten stu­dents at Bridge House School, and we were able to meet most of them dur­ing our trip to South Africa in Feb­ruary 2024.

We were impressed to see how nat­urally the Round Square IDEALS are played out here.

David Clark jumped at the chance to lead us round the cam­pus and to tell us more about the his­tory and the philo­sophy of Bridge House. In assembly, when he took the oppor­tun­ity of our visit to remem­ber our Founder, we were lit­erally speech­less. How reward­ing it is to real­ise that Franz-Wal­ter Aumund’s com­mit­ment to open­ing doors to edu­cational oppor­tun­ities is so greatly appre­ciated.
