Project: Round Square scholarships for children from vulnerable backgrounds

We were inspired by a very special story right at the beginning of our cooperation with the International Community School in Ghana. In general we support “our” Round Square children from an early age in order to accompany them for as many years of their school life as possible. While we were selecting our first two regular scholarship recipients at the International Community School, the headmaster told us about the fate of a particular boy. Ohene had always been an excellent scholar, and it was his overriding ambition to continue his studies at university. Like so many other families however, his family also got into financial difficulties during Covid, so he had to leave school in 2020 two years before his A levels. As well as achieving excellent marks at school he also participated enthusiastically in the Round Square activities of his school. We decided to support Ohene so that he could sit his A levels. He went back to school in 2021 and passed with the best results in his year. Today he is studying computer sciences with a full scholarship at the prestigious Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA.

Ohene wrote this to us in April 2024:

»I believe my being here would not have been possible if not for your scholarship that changed my life. (…) Now I am here at Tufts, being afforded many opportunities, just because your scholarship was a stepping stone for me to propel me into higher education. (…) I plan to sharpen my skills through research opportunities and internships, that will pave the way for me to become a problem solver and impactful person in society. That way I too will be able to reach out and help others, just as you helped me.«

“Well trained young people are the motor of society” was one of Franz-Walter Aumund’s firm beliefs, which is why funding of training and education has been one of the focal points of his philanthropic commitment from the beginning. This is underpinned in particular by the awarding of scholarships.

The best educational offering is worthless if children and young people are not physically capable of participating in it. Based on this experience the funding of health projects has become a new focus of Franz-Walter Aumund’s philanthropic commitment in recent years.
